You can still look for free, but it will now cost to climb.
In a move to both deal with crowding, pollution and ‘overtourism’ and to collect funds for trail maintenance, all four of the main hiking trails on Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji. The fee will be ¥4,000 (about $27 or £20)
Previously, only one trail, the Yoshida Trail in Yamanashi prefecture had a fee, which was first instituted last year; the other three, in Shizuoka prefecture were free. Now those three, Fujinomiya, Subashiri, and Gotemba, will charge the fee, and the fee for the Yoshida trail will double from its previous ¥2,000.
