The New York State Capitol is a wonderful tribute to Gilded Era architecture. It looks like a giant mansion, with no dome to be seen. Inside the is a giant stairway, made of New York sandstone. The stairway is lined with pillars, and each pillar has relief busts of people who have played important roles in the history of New York. In among these tributes are two of my favorite historical personalities, John Brown and Frederick Douglass.
