Antarctica, one of the world’s most remote areas is having a tourism boom, and even though the numbers are still fairly small, they are growing nearly as fast as the Antarctic ice cap is melting, prompting new warnings from scientists and others.
They fear that the combination of changing climate and growing visits could have lasting effects on the region, with the number of visitors having grown tenfold in the past three decades, with a 2024 total of 80,000 going ashore and another 36,000 viewing it close-up from ships.
Claire Christian, executive director of the environmental group Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition told press that “The sites you will see in Antarctica are extremely unique and not replicable anywhere else on the planet — the whales, the seals, the penguins, the icebergs — it’s all really stunning and it makes a huge impression on people.”
Aside from the warming loss—Antarctica is one of the fastest-warming areas of the world, and is losing about 165 billion tons of ice each year—they are also concerned about contamination, especially in the wake of an outbreak of hantavirus among passengers on a ship headed to the Antarctic. Humans are not the only contaminators: as the area has warmed, migratory birds have shifted patterns and are believed to have brought avian flu to the continent.
