Mounted Guard, Mausoleum of Mohammad V, Rabat

Moḥammad V (1909 – 1961) was the last sultan of Morocco (1927 – 1957) and its first king (1957 – 1961).  He is best know for encouraging Moroccan Nationalism, and helped the country secure independence from French colonial rule.

Mohammad V is buried in a magnificent mausoleum in Morocco’s capital city of Rabat.  The tomb is open to the public and is ceremonially guarded, the most impressive guards being those mounted on horses.  It’s one of the most popular tourist sites in Rabat.  .
