More rail connections for European capitals

A new train connection from Copenhagen to Prague through Berlin had its first run this week, restoring a link lost years ago and marking a step in the EU’s initiative to improve rail links among its capitals.

It’s not a high-speed journey, though, which is the eventual goal for the initiative announced by the European Commission late last year. For now, the trip takes 11 hours, of which the first 7 are between Copenhagen and Berlin; that will dop by two hours once track work in northern Germany is finished.

The route is one of ten prioritized in the plan. The service is a joint project between Czech Railways (ČD), Deutsche Bahn (DB) and Danish state railway DSB.

There will be two daily trains in each direction on the route, with an additional night service during the summer months. Fares start at about €60. The trains include a bistro car and a family section with tables for board games and movies, albeit only Czech-language ones.
