Montenegro island re-opens for visitors

A picturesque 15th-century fortified island off the coast of Montenegro will have its first summer visitors in five years soon, after a five-year shutdown over locals’ rights to use the island’s three small beaches.

The Montenegro government has brokered a deal between residents of Sveti Stefan and the Aman hotel chain which operates a luxury hotel and had kept locals off the island’s beaches.

Under the deal, two of the beaches will be open to all, while one will be reserved for hotel guests. Rooms at the former summer villa of Queen Marija Karađorđević start from £1,323 a night.
