A troop of hamadryas baboons got hold of a visitor’s smartphone last week, and promptly set to work taking selfies and videos of themselves.
The visitor, Shahra Bahloul, lost the phone while visiting Wildlands Zoo in Emmens, the Netherlands. It went into the cage when someone bumped her and the phone “flew right through the fences,” she said. “The phone was immediately surrounded by the baboons.” Zoo officials told her they would try to retrieve it, but didn’t hold out much hope.

At home, Bahloul checked her iCloud account and discovered that The baboons had recorded seven videos, some lasting seconds, others lasting several minutes. “They filmed the ground, but also themselves. In one shot, the three of them are standing around the phone.” She posted the videos on TikTok, where they have had a wide audience.
She later got the phone back from zoo officials, but it was ruined.
