The Millennium Monument at Heroes’ Square in Budapest was created for the Hungarian millennium festivities that were held in 1896. Today, it is a popular landmark in the Hungarian capital.
The centrepiece of the monument is the Millennium Column that rises to a height of 36 metres above the square.
Two magnificent colonnades stand either side of the column, with 14 of the most prominent figures in Hungary’s history situated between the colonnades’ Corinthian columns.
The monument was designed by Albert Schickedanz, an Austro-Hungarian architect. The sculptures were designed by György Zala and sculpted by several different Hungarian sculptors including Zala himself.
It’s an amazing monument—I was amazed when I visited and realized how few changes have been made in it despite a century of great changes in Hungary!
