Milan’s historic La Scala Opera House is looking down its nose at the clothes some of its visitors arrive in, and has warned they may be turned away.
While La Scala no longer expects its in-season guests to show up in formal gowns, top hats and tails, it’s warning that the opera is not for those who arrive in shorts, tank tops and flip-flops—or less.
The rules about informal clothing were first posted in 2015, but have not been an issue until lately. Now, however, signs have been posted warning that those who do not keep up with the ‘decorum’ will be booted with no refund.
“It would not be right to tell spectators how to dress, but it is necessary that they do dress, as not to cause discomfort to other people,” a spokesperson added.
