Miami opens biggest-ever cruise terminal

In an age when cruise ships are getting bigger and bigger, it stands to reason that they need bigger and bigger terminals to load and unload all those passengers, and Miami has just jumped even further in that direction with its new Terminal AA.

Terminal AA, financed and mainly intended for MSC Cruises, will ultimately be able to handle up to 36,000 passengers a day, half arriving and half leaving, from its three berths, one of which is still under construction. It’s also connected to a parking structure that adds another 2,400 spaces to the port’s capacity.

Other numbers for the terminal, which has 92,000 square feet on each of its levels, are equally impressive. The reception area has 18 facial recognition machines to speed up check-in as well as 20 X-ray scanners. There’s a lounge beyond that with 2,400 seats as well as a lounge for premium loyalty members. Returning passengers will also go through biometric scanners on their way to collecting their bags.
