The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has put Malta’s capital, Valletta, on notice that it could soon lose its World Heritage status if it doesn’t take stronger steps to protect its historic sites and buildings.
The committee has put Valletta on a December, 2026 deadline to submit plans to correct issues of overdevelopment and skyline threats or be placed on a list of Endangered World Heritage. Valletta has been a World Heritage site since 1980, but has been under warnings for over 15 years. Valletta is one of three World Heritage sites in Malta, along with Hal Saflieni Hypogeum and the Megalithic Temples.
Possible remediations could include limited development rights, enforced buffer zones around key sights or other measures.
Malta is pushing for a seat on the 21-member World Heritage Committee as part of its response, and is also moving forward with its proposal of a fourth site, the Fortifications of St John, to be added. That proposal includes Valletta’s harbour fortifications, the Cottonera and Santa Margherita Lines, the medieval capital of Mdina, and the fortified Ċittadella on Gozo.
