Madeira: Sights and Scenes of Funchal

This experience was an 8-day trip to see as many wineries on the island of Madeira as we could.  It was really challenging to come up with an itinerary, but with a little help from ChatGPT (which got several things wrong!), we were able to develop a trip to see as many as we could, taking the weekend and a national holiday into consideration (wineries are closed on those days). After a 12 hour flight (plus layover in New Jersey), we unpacked at a B&B rented for the week in the center of town.

My next post will be on the wineries we explored. Of course, we also enjoyed the town, the parks, the churches, the gondola, the harbor, the fireworks, and all of the rest that the city had to offer.

The garden was amazing, with several hectares devoted to all sorts of gardens, with museums, statues, water features, animals, birds, a mineral/gem museum, and an amazing Japanese garden. Peacocks and swans were in abundance. They even had the tobogganing on the street at 45 km/hr down the side of the hill! Needless to say, we had a grand time — finished by an amazing display of flower art on the street during a parade for Corpus Christi Day celebration in the center of town. Such a fragrant experience.
