Amtrak may not be high-speed rail, but if you can put up with Amtrak speeds—and have bundles of cash—you can hitch a luxury ride behind two of Amtrak’s long-distance trains.
Lunatrain, a company which hopes to eventually hitch luxury sleepers to the trains at prices comparable to business-class airfares, will start offering charters of restored private luxury railcars on January 15th, hooked on to the Coast Starlight between Los Angeles and Oakland in the Bay Area, and from San Francisco to Denver with the California Zephyr.
The trips, which take 12 and 33 hours respectively are priced at $10,000 and $18,500. The price is for the whole charter, not per person, so feel free to bring friends along. Each of the cars includes five bedrooms, lounge areas and the services of a chef.
