The old Medina in Fes is more than a thousand years old. Its alleys are narrow and the buildings are crowded and almost haphazardly built—each seeming to be an after thought to the one already there.
Little did I know that within these ancient walls were buildings with beautiful spacious interiors, many not containing any windows and built with privacy in mind. These are riads—homes of multiple stories centered around a (sometimes open-air) courtyard. Riads were once the homes of the wealthiest citizens and some still are. Many have been converted into hotels and a few into restaurants. We ate at several riads during travels through Morocco, none nicer than this one in Fes..

The architectural details were lovely and typical of the national style—Moroccan tile work, stucco and crafted cedar.

While the place was a feast for the eyes, it also was a feast in a more traditional sense. Everything was delicious!
