The Kentucky Derby, ‘The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports,’ will run on May 3rd, 2025. It is the longest continually held sporting event in America and one of the most prestigious horse races in the world.
Dating back to 1875, it is held annually on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. This race is filled with history and tradition, from thrilling horse races and extravagant hats to singing “My Old Kentucky Home.” Its rich heritage and timeless appeal continue to captivate audiences across generations.
Even if you can’t attend the race, you can learn about it and experience some thrills when visiting the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs.
Bright primary colors decorate the many exhibits and displays throughout the museum, telling the story of the race’s history, traditions, trainers, horse owners, and everything in between.
After touring the museum, you’ll set off on a timed tour of the Churchill Downs horse track.
Guests get a railside view of the track, which includes the winner’s circle, the last stretch, and Twin Spires. You can also pay extra and take the Ultimate Churchill Downs Tour. The tour is a journey through Churchill Downs, where guests can observe horses in training on the railside, explore the track’s backside for a close-up view of horses, jockeys, and trainers, and conclude with a visit to the Grandstand.
Whether you are a horse-racing fan or enjoy historic locations, a visit to the museum is a must when you visit Louisville.
