JetBlue offering umbrella for rainy vacations

JetBlue is offering an innovative extra bit of travel insurance, promising a refund if your vacation turns out to be a string of rainy days. Of course, there’s a fee attached.

The extra protection is offered in a partnership between JetBlue and WeatherPromise, and is offered through the airline’s vacation package portal. The coverage is for rainy vacations, not vacations canceled by weather.

“Excessive rain” is defined on a trip-by-trip basis based on a variety of factors, including destination, trip length and historical weather data. WeatherPromise says “millions of data points are assessed for each trip, and weather conditions are continually monitored using satellite imagery, weather stations and radar to ensure an accurate, real-time evaluation at the travel destination.”

And, if the weather triggers the coverage, JetBlue and WeatherPromise say, there’ll be no need to file forms; reimbursement will be automatic. Price of coverage varies with the trip, and can be paid in cash or points.
