Italy, France and Spain tops again in wine

Europe’s three biggest wine producers—Italy, France and Spain—are holding their places at the top, but face worries over possible shrinkage in their export market due to new U.S. tariffs.

Italy has published estimates for this year of 47 million hectoliters of wine and grape must, an increase of 8% over 2024 and a return to the average of previous years. Italy has held the top spot for five years except 2023, when fungal disease and extreme weather depressed the crop.

France is expected to produce 37.4 million hectoliters, reduced somewhat by August’s hot weather. Spain is expected to be just behind at 36.8 million.

Overall, export demand dropped by 4% for the year, with possible greater effects to come.
