In Texas, the “Best-Worst Seat in History”

A special exhibit at the East Texas Oil Museum reminds us that the big events of history are all connected not only to famous leaders but to the ordinary people who make them happen.

In this case, the exhibit focuses on Albert ‘Pappy’ DeHart, who grew up in a town not far from the museum in Kilgore, and who served on both of the missions that dropped atomic bombs on Japan in August, 1945. He was a tail gunner on one of the Hiroshima planes and on Bockscar, the plane that dropped the Nagasaki bomb.

The exhibit, “One Texan’s Improbable and Unimaginable Journey: Albert ‘Pappy’ DeHart’s Best-Worst Seat in History,” has been open since July 3. DeHart’s son Lynn will present a special program at the museum September 17.

For more information about the exhibit, museum hours or admission, contact the East Texas Oil Museum at (903) 983-8295.
