If you’re looking to get into the tourism business in Portugal, or perhaps open an eco-resort, or just want picturesque surroundings with no neighbors, here’s your opportunity.
The historic village of Póvoa Dão, located in Silgueiros, a few kilometers from Viseu, is up for sale an online auction, with a starting price of €1.7 million and a minimum of €1.445 million.
The village includes 41 granite houses, a chapel, common space, restaurant, tennis court and gardens. The company that bought it empty in 1995 spent about €5 million developing it as a tourist village before going bankrupt a few years ago when the operating company fell into difficulty and the bank that financed it collapsed.
The 800-year-old village, which lost its last original population in the 1960s, covers about 100 hectares of wooded hillside land. Its recent history and its present sale offer have re-opened debate about the future of Portuguese rural heritage as more and more rural areas lose population.
