Protests against over-tourism have become common in many places, but they’re usually directed at foreign visitors, but a town in France’s Brittany region has gone a step further.
In the seaside resort town of Plobannalec-Lesconil, popular with Parisians spending their traditional summer at the shore, there have been repeated incidents of insults shouted at visitors, and several cars had slogans keyed into their paintwork.
Local officials, including Mayor Loïc Le Fur have expressed ‘disgust’ over the damage to Paris-registered cars, adding “Beyond the material damage, it is the spirit of these actions that deeply shocks us. Our municipality has always been, and must remain, an open, welcoming and respectful municipality for everyone, regardless of their origin, place of residence or the reason for their presence among us.”
Incidents have also occurred in other nearby towns; in one, a wall was tagged with “refugees welcome, tourists go home!”
