HX, the expedition brand of Norway’s Hurtigruten cruises, is running new Arctic itineraries with itineraries and activities planned with Inuit elders, who will also lead some of the programs.
Starting this summer, the community-led excursions will be part of HX’s Northwest Passage sailings, based in Arctic Canada. The excursions will take place in Gjøa Haven, Pond Inlet, and Cambridge Bay, communities in the eastern Canadian Arctic that can only be visited during a short summer window. Each was planned with Inuit hosts to offer an opportunity to engage with daily life, culture, and traditions from the perspective of those living there.
The experiences each carry a price tag for participants and are limited to small groups. In the first phases, HX says, it will pass 100% of the fees directly to local individuals, artists and businesses.
