Hungry in Coach? Help may be coming!

The airline meals that all but disappeared from economy cabins after September 11 may be on their way back. Maybe. Delta is experimenting with new food options for cross-country travelers.

Delta started offering meal service again on selected flights between New York’s JFK and its West Coast hubs at Los Angeles and San Francisco in November for an experimental period that ends tomorrow. After that, they’ll consider whether it’s popular enough to continue.

Of course, it’s not the 3-course standard of trans-ocean flights or domestic travel of the past, but it is a sign both of better times financially for the airlines and of more need to distinguish regular coach from cattle-class ultra discounters. The menu includes a honey maple breakfast sandwich or a “breakfast medley;” for lunch the choices include a mesquite-smoked turkey combo with chips or a whole-grain veggie wrap.

Delta’s also upgrading food choices in the snack department, system-wide, ending the use of Delta-branded snacks. Instead, name brands will be on board, including Snyder’s of Hanover pretzels, Squirrel honey-roasted peanuts and NatureBox yogurt bars. The popular Biscoff biscuits will stay.
