These photos were taken at the Betty Ford Alpine Garden in eastern Vail. It was a nice summer day in the mountains. I was sitting on a park bench enjoying the weather and ambience of the garden, when a small bird whizzed by.
The hummingbird began drinking nectar from a nearby group of flowers. The bird moved quickly, darting from blossom to blossom, and gave me the opportunity to take some photos. Most of the photos were distorted by motion artifact, but a few turned out decently well.
I believe this is a broad-tailed hummingbird, which is native to this region. Males of this type have a splash of red feathers at their throat, so this bird was likely either a female or juvenile broad-tailed hummingbird. You can click on the link to learn more about the hummingbirds.
A startling fact to me is that hummingbirds weigh only 0.1 to 0.2 ounces (2.8 – 4.5 gm)!
Nice shots!
Excellent photos!
