Disney may have its new Star Wars attractions, but NASA is ready to take its shot with next month’s opening of the original ‘moon-shot’ control room at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Missoni Control Room 2, where the July 20, 1969 moon landing of Apollo 11 connected to Earth, has been out of use since the 1990s. It was rescued from deterioration and decay by the National Park Service, and has been restored to its 1969 appearance, dated monitors, polyester chairs and all. Funds came from a private group, Space Center Houston and from NASA.
Visitors will see a walk-through of the historic day, with video, sound and more to recreate the five stages of the mission, from launch to recovery. Admission is with a space center tram tour that costs $29.95 for adults and $24.95 for kids.
