While Portugal has a goal of upgrading its rail system with new equipment and routes, it still has some love for its oldest equipment and its last operating narrow-gauge line, from Macinhata do Vouga to Aveiro, with summer journeys using historic equipment.
The line, built over a century ago with meter-gauge tracks, serves locals in the area with several trains a day with diesel equipment after a several-year hiatus for repair and rehabilitation. CP, the Portuguese national rail operator will be adding Saturday trips in July and August, using wooden carriages that date to the line’s opening in 1908.
CP says the trip on the antique train “provides a true immersion in the history of transport and the traditions of the central-north region” and includes a chance to visit the railway museum in Macinhata do Vouga, as well as a free Agueda pastry during the train’s stop in Agueda at AgitAgueda, an art and local food show.
The Vouga Historical Train leaves Aveiro Station at 1:45 pm, with entertainment on board during the trip. After stops at Macinhata and Agueda, the train returns to Aveiro at 8:07 pm. The 206 seats on the train go for €41 for adults and €25 for children 4-12.l Train has a capacity to carry 206 passengers.
