Greenland tourism authorities apparently have heard the old adage that there’s no such thing as bad publicity, and are hoping its tourism business can cash in on the attention it’s been getting since U.S. President Trump called for a U.S. takeover of the islandf.
Speaking at a trade show on Arctic tourism in Reykjavik, Iceland last week, Tanny Por of Visit Greenland, said “We are hoping that we will be able to use some of the attention to get more guests to Greenland. The world’s eyes are on us.” She said that her organization has been surveying local operators to see how much new interest had been drummed up among people who had never thought of it as a destination.
The island, which is an autonomous dependency of Denmark, was already expecting increased traffic with its newly-opened international airport which allows direct flights from the U.S. and other destinations. Previously, nearly all air service had been through Iceland. Officials are worried, however, about too-rapid growth and its effects on small local communities; the entire island has a population of about 56,000.
