The photo above was taken from a moving boat on Rio Frio in the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge. This is in northeastern Costa Rica, near Nicaragua. It’s a pretty bird, a green kingfisher, characterized by a large bill (all the better to catch fish with) and metallic green plumage with white spots. The rust-colored patch on the chest is indicative of a male bird.
These birds are common in the southern United States, Central and South America. The photo above shows one having caught a relatively large fish — difficult to believe he can swallow it, but he did.
