Long Beach, Washington, sits near the north side of the Columbia River, close to where it flows into the Pacific Ocean. This stretch of sandy beach extends about 28 miles in length. The region marks the end of Lewis and Clark‘s famous journey more than 2 centuries ago, and was where they spent the winter.

The photo above was taken in early winter, when the days are short and the sun has migrated far to the south. It shows where the place got its name — it is, indeed, a long flat beach.
One of the things we spotted on the beach near here was the vertebra of a whale. These were covered by lichens and, I thought, made a rather nice photo.
