An area of tribal lands in the Grand Canyon that provides some of the most spectacular views and waterfalls will soon be off-limits to professional guides, but not to visitors who want to stay in the area.
Up to now, visitors headed down the winding path to the Havasupai Tribe’s small reservation have gone with guides provided by outfitters who also provide supplies and equipment for camping on the roadless reservation.
Visitors will still be able to camp on hundreds of camping sites or reserve a room at the tribe’s one lodge to enjoy the views and the 200-foot-plus waterfalls and warm swimming pools. Thirty thousand or more visitors come each year.
Tribal officials have said that they want to take control of the use of the area, and may reconsider allowing outfitters again in future.
