Gorillas are coming to the San Antonio, Texas, Zoo for the first time in over 30 years, and will find Congo Falls, a new-built habitat, waiting for them.
The new exhibit area, covering two acres, includes three habitats—Lowland Basin, Indoor Rainforest and Gorilla Gorge—and will be home to seven Western Lowland Gorillas. The habitats will blend lush natural landscapes, dynamic water features and enrichment areas.
The exhibits are designed to provide ample observation areas, both for the gorillas and Zoo guests. Aside from the areas for humans, the area features Silverback Peak, the tallest gorilla tower in the world at 70 feet, from which the gorillas will have views over the whole San Antonio area.
A historical note comes with the project: Excavation for the exhibit revealed parts of the quarry from which sandstone was mined 300 years ago to build the Alamo.
