Germany’s state rail operator, DB, is on a spree of fare freezes and budget fares this spring; the latest is a family ticket allowing up to five to travel together for a total of €99.99.
DB had already announced a fare freeze until next spring and a deal offering discounts on unsold last-minute tickets. The measures are both to help blunt the fuel-driven rises in the cost of travel and to win friends for DB which has been under fire for its prices and unreliable schedules.
Under the family ticket plan, up to five people can travel together, but at least one must be a child. The ticket, which will be available from mid-June to mid-September, will include seat reservations for trains that require them. For comparison, tickets for five from Hamburg to Munich would cost over €200.
The familienticket will show up in searches when children are listed in a group; it will be valid for all destinations within Germany, but not for international travel.
