At least four German cities are making plans for a future Olympics and Paralympics bid, hoping to become Germany’s candidate to host in 2036, 2040 or 2044.
Those rather long-term ambitions have gotten local approvals in Munich, Hamburg, The Cologne/Rhine area and now Berlin, whose Senate voted approval of what could be a €4.8 billion plan that includes a ‘golden ramp’ leading to the top of the Brandenburg Gate.
Voters in the North Rhine-Westphalia state, which includes Cologne, approved their proposal at an April referendum, Munich voted in October and Hamburg’s plan is scheduled for a May 31 vote. All of the proposals include both new construction with plans for after-use and the use of some existing facilities.
The German Olympic Committee will decide in late September which of the four plans to submit to the International Olympic Committee in hopes of winning one of the next three slots to be awarded. Los Angeles will host 2028, and the 2032 games are set for Brisbane, Australia.
