Georgia’s Surprising Wine Culture

Georgia is believed to be the crucible of viticulture in Europe, if not the entire world. The earliest methods of distilling the fine spirit are practiced to this day, and account for the finest of wines—and their abundance—so much so that wine tours are an important feature of tourism in the region.

Liquids of colors ranging from milky to carmine are sipped delightfully along with tidy nibbles of ‘churchkhela’, or sticky sweets of dough painted with rainbow hues. Tourists get a hands-on experience of visiting homestays and pottering around in this joyful practice.

There are also particular homes that specialize in making artisanal bread and cheese, and this greatly adds to the charm of the tours. The wine flows fast and free as one spends the better part of the day getting high on the simple pleasures of life.
