Frontier’s ‘Big Game’ loyalty swap

Budget air carrier is out to poach some loyal customers from other airlines, hotel chains and more by offering to swap up to 5,000 loyalty points for 5,000 of its own—enough for a free ticket on some of the airline’s flights.

The deal, which runs through February 22 on the airline’s website is built around the story of John Leonard (above), who in 1996 collected 7 million points in a Pepsi promotion whose ad showed the winner getting a military jet. Leonard lost a lawsuit trying to claim the jet, or its value, but Frontier is giving him 7 million Frontier Miles, which it says will be enough to fly free forever.

Frontier is using the promotion also to push its loyalty program and its co-branded credit card, emphasizing quick earning of flights and other benefits. Frontier’s other big news recently is its deal to acquire Sun Country Airlines, a deal expected to close later this year.
