The Flying Scotsman, once a famous train service that linked London and Edinburgh with simultaneous trains, is returning to the timetables, although not quite simultaneous this time.
The route, now part of routes operated by LNER, will use modern ‘Azuma’-style trains, which the rail operator says will provide “comfort, speed and convenience.” The London terminal for the route is at Kings Cross. Customers travelling on the two services will also be offered a Scottish-themed menu featuring haggis, neeps and tatties.
The simultaneous runs actually date to 1862, with the Flying Scotsman name adopted in 1924, with 10 am departures from both cities. The new version will leave Edinburgh at the traditional 10 am, but the London departure will be at 10:30 am. The rail operator’s press director told press that “these revised departure times are as close as we can get to that today.”
