There’ll be no repeat this year of the great overflow of potatoes and other root crops that made big headlines last year, due to this year’s drought and high summer heat.
Last year’s harvest in Belgium and the Netherlands featured mounds and mounds of potatoes—an immense harvest that drove down prices and led producers to give away tons of tubers.
Dutch officials told local press that the biggest effect has been on root crops such as potatoes, carrots and onions, which are smaller this year and less abundant. Field crops are also affected, producing, among other effects, lighter lettuces and misshapen broccoli.
