Finland tackles drunk scooter riders

Finland’s new micromobility law is racking up fines for drunken riding at quite a clip—nearly 200 in the first month of the law.

Fines of €200 each are assessed for violations of the law, which applies to e-scooters and some e-bikes. Other devices, such as motorscooters and motorcycles were already covered under other laws.

The new law also bans under-15s from the e-scooters and from more powerful e-bikes.

Another major issue for Helsinki police is passengers; although having a second rider on the scooters has been banned for years it’s been increasing. So far, police have issued tickets in 377 cases in the first half of this year compared to 361 for all of 2024 and 168 for 2023. The new law increases the fine for carrying passengers from €40 to €60.
