Some of us like to stay indoors or travel to warm places for the winter, but Finland’s cold weather and winter sports apparently have their fans, too, with business up significantly this year.
According to statistics from Business Finland, the number of winter visitors grew this year by 7% to 1.24 million, while their spending rose by 15% to €1.2 billion, or about €991 per person. 88 countries were represented among the visitors. The agency, which promotes tourism and travel to Finland, said most of the spending went toward accommodation, dining, transport, shopping, and leisure activities such as skiing and cultural events.
For the full year 2024, including summer visitors as well, the average spend was €764 by nearly 5 million visitors. The agency noted that tourists who travel to Finland in winter tend to spend more per person than summer visitors, largely due to the higher cost of winter-specific services and equipment.
