Finland’s in the midst of a cold wave, which considering that it includes land north of the Arctic Circle, is saying something. Yesterday morning marked the coldest point so far this year, with temperatures in Savuvoski, in eastern Lapland dropping to –39.9°C.
That’s actually an interesting number because it’s just about at the point where Centigrade and Fahrenheit scales cross. –39.9°C is equivalent to –39.82°F. Forecasts are for continuing cold, possibly even a few degrees colder for today.
It’s not the coldest Finland has ever recorded, though; that came in 1999 when a temperature of -51.5C (-60.7F) was recorded.
