Cleaning the Catch, Seward

One of the highlights of a visit to Seward, Alaska, is to see it’s busy and fine harbor.  While exploring the shops and sights, we spotted these fishermen cleaning the morning’s catch and packing the fresh fillets into tubs for delivery to local restaurants.  In Seward, the “fresh catch of the day” really is fresh.

These folks were very efficient, quickly liberating the boneless fillets and dispatching fish carcasses into an open hole behind their cleaning tables.  (On seeing where the fish waste was being tossed, there was a barge catching this waste, which is pulled out to sea and dumped there where it is naturally broken down).

Most of the catch was salmon, but some halibut and rock fish had also been harvested.
