Exploring the Melissani Cave, Kefalonia, Greece

The Melissani Cave lies a short distance from Sami, a small port town on Kefalonia’s eastern coast. It is also sometimes referred to as Melissani Lake, because of the water that flows through it. The cave’s roof has collapsed and the sunlight gives the lake a wonderful hue of deep turquoise.

The entrance ticket includes a boat ride around the cave.

The rock formations you see are interesting, but the main attraction (for me at least) was the view upwards through the almost circular hole in the cave roof.

Melissani Cave is a popular attraction and we were lucky to arrive just as the tour buses were departing. The boatman commented on enjoying the fact that our boat was the only one on the circuit at that time and he gave us plenty of good opportunities to take photos.

This blog beautifully captures the magic of Melissani Cave. The way sunlight reflects on the crystal-clear turquoise waters feels almost unreal and truly mesmerizing. I loved how you highlighted both the natural beauty and the mythological charm behind this place. It’s fascinating that this underground lake was once a sacred site and is now explored by boat tours . Your writing makes me want to experience this hidden Greek wonder firsthand
