A new airport for Addis Ababa is under construction, planned to be Africa’s largest. The $12.5 billion project is scheduled to be ready by 2030.
Located at Bishoftu, about 45 kilometers south of the capital, it will be the main hub for Ethiopian Airlines, which has also been given the contract for construction.
With four runways and space to park 270 planes, it’s planned to be able to handle 110 million passengers a year. That’s more than four times the capacity of the existing airport, which will reach its limit in two to three years. Ethiopian Airlines is Africa’s largest carrier.
