Dutch spent more money on fewer bikes

A combination of pandemic-based chip shortages and a big shift to electric bikes saw Netherlands bike sales hit a new record for total spending while fewer bikes were sold. For the first time, electric bikes outsold human-power ones.

Dutch road user organizations BOVAG and RAI Vereinigung issued a report showing sales of a bit over 900,000 bicycles last year, the first under-one-million year since 2017. Another 400,000 used bikes were also sold.

The sales totals dropped by 16% with even e-bikes selling fewer, with a 12% drop in sales. The disparity in rate allowed the proportion of e-bikes to hit 52%. The average new bike price overall was about €1600, pushed up by the average e-bike price of €2400.
