Dutch rail operator NS is taking steps to ease one of Netherlands rail passengers’ three biggest irritations: bags and suitcases taking seats, leaving them with nowhere to sit.
The carrier’s new rules ban putting bags on seats even if there is plenty of room, because, NS says, many passengers don’t dare to ask anyone to move a bag for fear of short fuses and angry responses. And, passengers can’t count on offenders removing bags voluntarily: “People increasingly pretend not to notice how busy it is, by staring out of the window, for example,” the spokesperson said.
Conductors will remind passengers of the rule, but will not hand out tickets or fines. Posters and window stickers will be going up in trains as well.
