While some airlines around the world are cutting flights or routes in the face of fuel price hikes and shortages. some areas are looking for measures on the ground as well. Among them, the Netherlands is considering a €49 all-you-can-ride national transit pass, similar to Germany’s Deutschlandticket and Austria’s Klimaticket.
The measure, under consideration this week by the Dutch cabinet, would be an option to offset rising transport and energy costs for consumers, and also make taking the tram, train or bus a more attractive alternative to driving. It would provide access to all public transit and regional trains across the country, but like others would likely not include major intercity trains. Another version of the proposal would limit it to off-peak hours.
The cost of the program, which would run for several months, is estimated at €118 million.
