Dublin port tour offers ‘insider view’

Dublin Port, which operates Ireland’s largest and busiest port, is opening the doors for visitors this month and next with a Wednesday tour, led by a retired dockworker who spent over three decades working there.

The hour-long tour through areas normally closed to the public, includes towering container ships, oil depots and odd corners including the Brexit inspection yards. The port handles €165 billion in freight each year, along with 1.6 million passengers.

Among the tour guides is Anthony Finnegan, who began as an apprentice in 1979; he tells visitors that “When I started, you’d be put in the cranes for three months, then into the machine shop, then the marine section. It was a real education. I learned from some extremely good people.” He told interviewers that he is often struck by the reactions of younger generations rediscovering the port through the tours.
