Dry Zone Botanic Gardens, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has five botanic gardens. The newest one, created in 2013, is located in Mirijjawila in the Hambantota district and focusses on plants from dry areas.

There are some lovely palm avenues – obviously, given how new the garden is, the palms have not reached anything like their full height yet.

There is also plenty of colour, but you have to look for it.

My favourite parts of the garden were the sections devoted to succulents and cacti.

As you can see from the photos, the sky was quite overcast. Later in the day, a thunderstorm developed and it poured – a reminder that a ‘dry’ zone in Sri Lanka is not a desert, but an area that receives little rain outside the winter months. Our visit was in early spring. Hambantota, in any case, is just on the edge of the dry zone, which covers much of the East and North of the country.
