The Drogarati Cave is located close to the port of Sami on Kefalonia’s east coast. It was discovered some 300 years ago when an earthquake created a large fissure in the surrounding rocks that allowed access to the ground below. The cave was opened to the public in 1963.
There are impressive formations of stalactites and stalagmites. It is thought that the cave is about 150 million years old.
Narrow descending steps lead to a depth of 60 metres and the cave’s dimensions come as a surprise when you finally reach it. It has a size of around 65 x 45 metres and a height of 20 metres.
The cave has become a very popular visitor attraction and is firmly on the tour group circuit – as we discovered when we tried to fight our way out against a steady stream of two coachloads of cruise ship passengers in full herd mode!
