If you search the TravelGumbo archives, you’ll find a dozen or more articles by DrFumblefinger and his wife Sylvia who have become connoisseurs of doors on their travels, highlighting doors across three continents.
That’s inspired me to take a closer look at doors as I go, and in Trieste, I found quite a few of note, including the entrance, above, of the city hall or Palazzo del Municipio.

The city hall doors are quite a contrast to the ancient entrance to the Cathedral of San Giusto, above, which incorporates medieval fortifications, left-over Roman bits and a few additions of its own.

Some of the doors are all wood and feature extensive detailing such as the two above, one from an apartment house and the other a side entrance of the Serbian Orthodox Saint Spyridon Church.

Others incorporate elaborate ironwork and glass panels, like those just above and below.

And here’s another all-wood set, older and less well-preserved, but with careful detail.

And finally, this simple but elegant example at a minor entrance to the offices of the regional government.
