The ‘fish doorbell’ that opens the way for migrating fish to pass through Utrecht’s canals without waiting for the locks to be opened for boats has been turned on again for the sixth year.
An underwater camera livestreams the migrating fish, allowing internet users around the world to alert the lock-keeper when fish are starting a traffic jam at the lock.
On Monday, shortly after it opened for the March-to-June season, there were already over 2,000 people watching on its official website and over 100 more following on YouTube. At points, so many people were on the official site that the doorbell becomes unavailable.
